VPN Unlimited review and the rating criteria
A VPN will help secure your online traffic and protect your data, or device from external or internal vulnerabilities. You can unblock geo-restricted streaming and torrenting platforms, and bypass ISP throttling.
However, to test out the quality and performance of the best VPN service, you have to follow a certain criterion.
So, in this KeepSolid VPN Unlimited review, I’ll be testing its app based on:
- Pricing
- Location
- Security
- Invisibility
- Streaming and torrenting
- Speed
- Compatibility
- Reliability
Pricing – Is VPN Unlimited affordable?
There are many budgeted VPNs that offer the best features and performance. However, choosing one also depends on your budget and what provider you settle for.
So, keeping that in mind, how affordable is VPN Unlimited? The prices back in 2020 were a little different, and were broken up into 4 packages depending on whether you require 5 or 10 multi-device connections:
However, VPN Unlimited has made a few changes after its recent updates to the software. Here’s what it costs now:
There are only 3 packages to choose from:
I feel like the previous prices were a lot more affordable as compared to the new updates. There are other VPNs like Surfshark that cost just $2.49/mo. for a 2 year plan.
Additional VPN Unlimited Costs
Dedicated or Personal IP
Also included in the VPN Unlimited specs is the provision of Personal IP addresses. That, of course, has additional charges added on top of any subscription. This includes server locations based in:
- Canada
- Germany
- France
- Bangalore, Karnataka, India
- Netherlands
- United Kingdom
- USA
The price for static IP break into 2 plans:
For more information on the cost of personal IP, you can visit their website.
Personal Server
Something very different about VPN Unlimited is the fact that it also provides additional personal servers to its list. This means you can add it on top of a paid VPN Unlimited subscription.
It has a panel of server locations for you to choose from, which looks like:
The list of personal servers varies according to which region you require it for. The best price of personal servers (Americas, Europe, Asia & Pacific) for the yearly plan costs:
- $18.33/mo. (Billed per month), which gives you connection speeds of 1 GBPS, RAM of 1 GB, and on a Single Core CPU.
There’s also a special offer of servers in multiple regions around the world, starting at a price of:
- $28.99/mo. (Billed per month), which gives you connection speeds of 100 MBPS, RAM of 2 GB, and on Single Core CPU.
For more information regarding investing in a personal server with your subscription, you can find its extended details on the website.
Payment Methods
You can get your VPN Unlimited subscription via the various payment methods:
- Bitcoin
- PayPal
- Stripe
- Paymentwall
- Amazon
- Gift Cards
- Credit Cards
- In-app purchases (iTunes or Google Play)
30-day money-back guarantee
I’d usually say that before buying any VPN, you need to put it to the test, either by means of its free trial or reliable refund policy.
Most premium VPN services come with a free trial period and always offer their complete in-app features, only with limitations made towards the devices it supports.
VPN Unlimited used to offer a free trial on selection, which usually stretches on to 7-days. However, they now offer a 30-day money-back guarantee that is much more convenient.
They also state that the free trial version of the app does not contain nor highlight the true VPN Unlimited app features and was honest enough to state that the free trial app may contain bugs.
Always make sure you go through the refund policy thoroughly before making any decisions.
Location – Is VPN Unlimited a safe option?
You should know that whenever investing in a VPN, always make sure you check whether they’re based in a location that’s considered safe.
Just in case you don’t understand what a location has to do with safety, let me explain it to you a little bit.
The safety of a location regarding a VPN depends highly on whether they’re a part of the eyes-alliance; who often sell their users data among other countries.
But, at the same time, some VPN providers, who’re situated among the alliance regions, hold strong privacy and no-data retention policies, which also is a major deal.
VPN Unlimited is a prodigy of KeepSolid Inc., based in the US. So, in terms of jurisdiction, it isn’t safe. However, at the same time, the VPN provider itself has strict privacy policies, which will be discussed further on.
VPN Unlimited network coverage – What’s served?
Apart from being clear about VPN Unlimited’s jurisdiction being an unsafe one, let’s talk about what it has to offer in matters of maximum coverage.
The performance of a VPN doesn’t revolve around having the biggest list of server locations but rather depends on the widest coverage with maximum potential.
VPN Unlimited has around 500+ servers in 80+ locations spread across 50+ countries. For some that may be very few, while it still encompasses more coverage than many bigger league VPNs in the industry.
Here is a list containing some of the VPN Unlimited servers:
Does VPN Unlimited work in China?
Yes, it does.
To use a VPN for China and bypass the great firewall, you have to be connected to some of the best servers, and protocols. For VPN Unlimited, you should consider connecting to either a US, UK, Canadian, German, Hong Kong, or Singaporean server.
Other than this, make sure you’re connected to the KeepSolid Wise Protocol, which is built for cracking through a firewall.
Security – Discussing VPN Unlimited encryption and other advanced features
To stay anonymous and to make sure your privacy is maintained while carrying out your usual internet activities, you need to make sure that the VPN you go with is competent enough to encompass the best security measures.
Let’s take a look at VPN Unlimited’s encryption and security features:
Its encryption and protocols
It’s of great importance that a VPN be built up using the best and most impenetrable encryption.
VPN Unlimited uses bank-grade AES 256-bit encryption, which is one of the strongest in its kind. It also uses perfect forward secrecy and 2.048-bit RSA keys for authentication and TLS encryption for browsers.
Coming to its protocols, it supports a wide platform, which includes, OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard, and our own KeepSolid Wise TCP/UDP, and IPSec protocol for an extra layer of protection.
Kill Switch
One of the main features to look for whenever choosing a VPN is a Kill Switch. Luckily, VPN Unlimited does come with an in-built Kill Switch. This basically aids in shielding your data and physical location from leaking out whenever or if ever the VPN connection drops suddenly.
DNS leak protection
VPN Unlimited also comes with an in-built DNS leak protection feature that when switched on, makes sure that all your online activities or data are secured and leak-free.
Trusted Network
This feature works like a Whitelister for Networks. It allows you to list all the secure Wifi networks you’d want to run with your Wifi and which one you don’t want.
Ping test
The app also has an in-built ping feature. Before connecting to any server, while the VPN is disconnected, it allows you to test the ping of each server, showing you what you’ll be dealing with.
Invisibility – The VPN Unlimited leak test
The great part about VPN Unlimited is the fact that if ever there’s a need to safely torrent or try to access restricted streaming services from abroad, you don’t have to worry about your data or physical location leaking out.
This is because I conducted a few leak tests for accurate results. I connected to a US server to test out whether VPN Unlimited would leak out my IP, DNS, and WebRTC, and headed to the following sites:
For my IP and DNS leak test, I went to ipleak.org and connected it to a US server. The results I got were:
For my WebRTC leak test, I went to browserleaks.com, and with connection to a US server, rendered the following results:
As you can see, they’re all leak-free!
Streaming – Can I unblock Netflix with VPN Unlimited?
Yes, you can!
It is one of the leading streaming platforms in the world that spark the need for a VPN in almost 40% of VPN users. Most users look for VPN services that unblock streaming services from anywhere in the world, due to geo-restrictions and censorship.
The most sort after Netflix library is the US one, and luckily, VPN Unlimited was capable enough to unblock it.
However, it is understood that not all or every server will give you that kind of access. So, for the best results, you should connect to one of the US servers on the list and enjoy unlimited Netflix access from all over the world.
I wouldn’t call it the best for it, as compared to many other providers like Surfshark, but it is reliable enough to get through the blocks.
Another great bit about VPN Unlimited is that besides connecting to a US server for Netflix or streaming in general, the app offers a separate selection of servers for specific streaming platforms.
It looks a little something like this:
It also unblocks other big services that are most sought after. These include Hulu, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.
Just select any streaming server from the app, and you’re good to go!
Another reason why VPN Unlimited seems to do quite well in unblocking various streaming websites is the fact that it runs on KeepSolid Wise technology, which is basically required to bypass even the toughest of firewall barriers.
However, even though it unblocks Netflix, the only drawback would be that it doesn’t yet have a dedicated VPN app for it, and can only be run via a browser.
Torrenting – Does VPN Unlimited support P2P?
Yes, VPN Unlimited does provide P2P support. However, if you head down to its FAQ section, you’ll see that even though the VPN does provide P2P support, they only endorse safe torrenting and not of copyrighted nature.
Also, just like streaming, the VPN also provides a separate server bar for torrenting. There’s the inclusion of specific servers for it, like:
Since torrenting isn’t considered legal activity in almost every part of the world, and if you think you’re going to do it anyway, it’s always best to make sure you do it safely.
This particularly involves choosing a VPN, not because of the best speeds, but one that comes with solid encryption or security measures.
VPN Unlimited does come heavily guarded with basic and necessary security measures that are definitely fit for “safe” torrenting and streaming. Especially since we’ve just established that it doesn’t leak your IP, DNS and WebRTC.
Speed – Is VPN Unlimited fast?
Fast enough.
Yes, it’s a myth that a VPN is supposed to speed up your internet connection but rather should amplify or support a fast or higher internet speed.
However, in the case of VPN Unlimited, the speed results were both good and bad. They’re good because they’re fast enough for HD and 4K streams, but bad because they were stable enough. This was in comparison to my regular internet speeds without the VPN.
To test the speeds, I connected to various servers, to find a difference in results. All tests were done on speedtest.net.
Before testing the speed of each of the following servers, I first tested out the local connection speed without connecting to the VPN:
These were the speed results after connecting to the US server:
These were the speed results after connecting to the UK server:
Compatibility – What devices does KeepSolid VPN Unlimited support?
The worth of a VPN shows great value towards the number of devices and apps it supports.
VPN Unlimited, allows you to connect up to 5 devices per subscription. However, you can add 5 more devices to the package by paying an extra fee.
:
- Windows
- Windows Phone
- iOS
- macOS
- Linux
- Apple TV
- Android
- Browser Extensions (Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Edge)
VPN Unlimited on Windows
The Windows app is smooth to operate and has a user-friendly interface that even beginners can pan out easily. On the main map, you’ll find a start button; you’ll have to click on that to connect to the VPN.
When you connect to the servers, there’s a bar that says “Optimal”, choosing the best server for you depending on what location you’re originally from.
Other than that, it further breaks into columns, dividing the various servers according to ones optimized for streaming and ones that are for torrenting. You’ll also find the entire server list under the general bar, with all the servers alphabetically organized.
In its settings, it includes options for you to choose the best protocol for you, giving you a list of options to choose from. It also has a functional Kill Switch, a DNS Firewall, and a Trusted Network feature, which you can manually enable or configure.
VPN Unlimited on iOS
The iOS version is a little similar as compared to the Windows counterpart. The interface is simple to use, with its settings much easier to reach through.
Its face is met with a map, for you to easily pan out a location by zooming in and out of the screen, which you won’t find on the Windows app.
Apart from choosing a location by directly double tapping on the map, you can also choose any server of choice from its list mentioned under the general tab. It further fans out with servers dedicated to streaming and torrenting, with selected server locations already sorted out for you.
Coming to its settings, it’s very unlikely for you to ever find an iOS client that supports an OpenVPN protocol.
And luckily for you, VPN Unlimited provides OpenVPN, IKEv2, and its own KeepSolid Wise protocol. It also has other additional features like a Kill Switch and a split-tunneling feature for selected Networks called Trusted Network.
VPN Unlimited on Android
The Android app is a little similar to the other versions, starting off with a panned map on its front.
But, unlike the Windows version, you can zoom in and out of the map in the Android app. Each pointer on the map is notified with the server location name.
Along with this and similar to the Windows and iOS versions, it has a tab to choose whichever server location you desire.
It also includes separate tabs of servers for streaming and torrenting, marking each server for streaming with the name of the streaming platform. For e.g. includes dedicated servers marked as Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime Video, and more.
In its settings you’ll find a list of protocols, a Kill Switch and Trusted Network feature to work with; with functionality after configuring the settings manually.
VPN Unlimited with Browser Extensions
Choosing a VPN that has an app extension for browsers (Chrome and Firefox) is very important. There are times when you find yourself on websites that may or may not contain malicious content, which can be taken care of with a VPN.
Keeping that in mind, it works great for unblocking Netflix through the browser itself since the VPN doesn’t really have a dedicated Netflix app just yet.
To choose a server, you’ll have a list that scrolls onwards, with servers for streaming, torrenting and general connections that run in a straight line.
Coming to its settings, it has a very basic list of just the KeepSolid Wise protocol and WebRTC leak prevention. These browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera, work just for basic use and for unblocking restricted content on websites like Netflix and Disney Plus.
For more on how to get started, you can find a tutorial of each supported device on their webpage, along with a guide just in case your VPN Unlimited app is not connecting.
Reliability – VPN Unlimited Policies and third-party reviews
After having gone through the entire VPN Unlimited review, I’ve established the underlying capabilities and drawbacks that the VPN endeavors.
However, even after coming to the conclusion that VPN Unlimited is a great app for day-to-day surfing, having good security, and unblocks streaming platforms, the end product always and mostly depends on whether we deem it as a reliable choice.
So, let’s take a look at the following:
Privacy policies
Here’s a quick glance at the VPN Unlimited privacy policy,
As you can see that VPN Unlimited doesn’t seem to log or store any of your data. However, on the other hand, even though they seem to have a no-logging policy, they do tend to collect some data, which you can extensively go through in its privacy policy.
Support team
Another thing to consider when choosing a VPN is the reliability of a good support team.
I went through the support page on the website. VPN Unlimited claimed to have a24/7 online chat support. However, I did not seem to run into any sort of online chat support, so I can’t really comment on that.
Apart from that, their email support seems to be a great help.
When I contacted them, I had to wait a while before they finally got back, which is just like many other email chat support. However, even though I like speedy online support, the email correspondent was more than helpful and replied to each and every question I asked.
To conclude – Do I recommend VPN Unlimited?
Yes, I do.
I’ve conducted many VPN reviews giving the users a clear idea of what a VPN app offers and what makes them the best. Having tested and weighed out all my options in my VPN Unlimited review, I wouldn’t say that it is one of the top VPNs just yet.
It does make a good app for day-to-day use, unblocking streaming platforms like Netflix with reliable performances, supports all the major devices and apps, has a practical but good hold on security, and doesn’t really have the best speeds.
But, overall, it makes a good VPN provider, for a reasonably good price. Even though its no-logging policy seems to be unhinged, it does provide sound security for safe surfing.
All-in-all, there’s a lot that can be improved for it to be labeled as a top VPN provider, but that doesn’t mean it’s incapable of fulfilling your basic security and privacy needs. Hopefully, this VPN Unlimited review helps you make your final decision!
