Best Anime On HBO Max

There aren’t a lot of animes left on HBO Max after the recent scourge. Nevertheless, we snuck through their databases and found the best animes for you. The genre of these animes ranges from action and adventure to tragedies and comedies. Here are the best animes on HBO Max:

Japanese Name ベルセルク
Genre Dark Fantasy, Supernatural, Action
Creator Kentaro Miura
Is Berserk a series or a movie? Series and Movie
Does Berserk have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Berserk? Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Prime Video

Berserk is a cinematic masterpiece, and that statement is not up for discussion. The anime is based on the late Kentaro Miura’s manga of the same name. The manga is morbid, unsettling, dark, and fun at the same time. It’s as if Mr. Miura took all the taboo topics from the real world and trans-morphed them into a work of fiction that exceeds human capabilities.

The story follows Guts, an unfortunate child embroiled in a fight with a pre-determined destiny out to kill him. Despite his tragic childhood, Guts reaches adulthood, and that’s when things hit the fan. What does Guts do? He grabs a sword long enough to slice through everything and goes Keyser Söze on everyone. Sadly, Kento Miura passed away before completing the manga, and his protegees are now trying to complete his legacy. The manga and anime have dark and disturbing elements, but Berserk is still worth watching.

Is Grave of the Fireflies a series or a movie? Movie

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the saddest war drama animated films ever created. The story was penned by Akiyuki Nosaka, and after much deliberation, the animated film was released in 1988. The story is set in Kobe, Japan, during the peak of World War II. Despite being an animated film, the emotions feel so raw that you would assume it’s a live-action.

The movie follows the story of two war Orphans, Seita and Setsuko. After their mother’s untimely death, Seita has to protect his younger sister from the ravages of war-torn Japan. As bombers cross overhead and sirens wail in their vicinity, even survival seems like a far-fetched story to the two siblings. This gripping film will redefine the way you perceive wars.

A newly revived Senku, alone in this new world, has to kick-start civilization with the power of science. It’s an anime that you’re bound to love. In Senku’s own words, we’re ten billion percent sure about that.

Creator Ken Wakui
Is Tokyo Revengers a series or a movie? Series
Does Tokyo Revengers have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Tokyo Revengers? Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney Plus

Tokyo Revengers is like the Japanese animated version of The Godfather, with a bit of drama and sci-fiction mixed into the plot. The manga was created by Ken Wakui, and it has been adapted into an anime of the same name. The story is a chaotic but beautiful mess that leaves you in awe of the hand that wrote it.

The plot starts with Takemichi, an average Japanese guy whose girlfriend (Hinata) and her brother (Naota) die in a brawl because of a gang called Tokyo Manji Gang. After accidentally ending up in front of a moving train, Takemichi is miraculously transported 12 years into the past.

Jumping between the present and the past, Takemichi must save his girlfriend and all of his friends. If only we could do the same and prevent all the high school melodrama or buy Bitcoin when it was cheap.

The story was received quite well by audiences because of the complex characters and gripping story.

The story starts with our main lead, Angelo Lagusa, receiving a letter. The Italian mafia family, Vanetti, killed Angelo’s family. Angelo concocts his revenge plan for 7 years and decides it’s time to unleash his fury on the Vanetti. And so begins the story of 91 Days. Each episode is filled with betrayal, death, and crime. It’s like watching an animated version of Taxi Driver.

From a walking magical castle to magi, a beautiful love story, and war, Howl’s Moving Castle has everything you would normally expect from a Studio Ghibli movie. Hayao Miyazaki created and released the film in 2004, expressing his outrage at the Invasion of Iraq. The film explores gripping topics of war, reconciliation, and resistance.

The plot revolves around a milliner named Sophie. The Witch of Waste curses her out of the blue because of a mundane problem. She gets embroiled in a war and Howl’s affair, who is trying to stop the war by interfering with both sides. The story is beautiful, and multiple scenes showcase the brutality of wars.

Creator Kazuki Nakashima, Ryo Akizuki
Is Kill La Kill a series or a movie? Series
Does Kill La Kill have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Kill La Kill? Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video

Kill La Kill has the most absurd plot of any anime we’ve ever watched. Every scene is like a comedy of errors, but surprisingly, the plot is quite heavy and dense. The story follows a girl named Ryuko Matoi, who has giant scissors. Like a murderous seamstress, our lass Rukyo is out to avenge her father, who was killed by some shady hooligans for creating Nudist Beach.

The names of all the organizations in this anime are similar to those we gave our action figures back in high school, Lord Emperor Supreme Chungus. The story revolves around Ryuko, the Hannujou Academy, and her mother (a fashionista). The anime is beautiful and leaves you wanting more after each episode. We highly recommend watching it.

The movie features Arrietty, a small human living in the walls of a house where Sho arrives before his operation. Arietty belongs to a group of people called borrowers who live in nooks and crevices of houses without alerting humans of their presence.

As you would expect, Sho sees Arietty. The film follows Arietty’s adventures and the misfortune of being discovered by Sho’s aunt. The story deeply delves into topics like survival, estrangement, and eviction. It’s a great movie that we know you’ll love.

The story is a mix of supernatural, science, and slice-of-life elements, and it’s a hilarious anime if you like odd adaptations.

The story revolves around Rai, a Noblesse. He has powers that he uses to save humans, and the best part is he’s been doing it for ages. After reawakening after 832 years of sleep (which I could sleep like that), Rai has to fit into a completely different world. He enrolls in high school, and everything pans out just how you’d expect.

Konosuba God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World is a cheery anime from the Isekai genre. After a shut-in Japanese high highschooler dies embarrassingly, a goddess decides to Isekai him into a parallel world with game-like elements. Instead of choosing an overpowered weapon or ability, our simp king chooses the goddess Aqua.

Following his arrival into this world, Kazuma Satou (the lead) recruits more members. Since he is an A-grade simp (mad respect), he chooses Megumin (a violent mage) and Darkness (a crusader with some weird tendencies). The series follows the adventures of these misfits on their quest to defeat the demon king. It’s a great anime with even greater comedy.

15. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland is an anime about children stuck in a make-believe orphanage, run by a human but governed by super-evolved cockroaches. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? But this is literally the plot of the anime. It’s a suspenseful, fear-inducing, and inspiring anime that we’re glad we watched.

The anime has some disturbing elements, but they’re not strong enough to scar you for life. The story follows the escape and transformative journeys of Emma, Ray, and Norman. The design, graphics, action, and story are fleshed out, and everything feels perfect.

Other Notable Animes To Watch

If you need something a bit extra, like a classic anime that takes your breath away, then try the recommendations below. We’ve chosen these animes for their quality stories, unique animation styles, and our own love for each verse. Oh, sweet nostalgia, how we miss the good old days. Here are some more animes that you can watch:

1. Dororo

Japanese Name どろろ
Genre Action, Dark Thriller, Supernatural
Creator Osamu Tezuka
Is Dororo a series or a movie? Series
Does Dororo have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Dororo? Crunchyroll

Dororo is a fantastic anime and perhaps one of the best the industry has ever produced. The plot development, style, characters, and everything else is beyond anything we’ve ever experienced before. The story follows Hyakkimaru, a failed child sacrifice to the demons of Japan. The demons consume all the body parts of Hyakkimaru except his heart.

Despite all odds, the boy survives and tries to regain his body parts and senses. Despite the action sequences, Dororo is more about the duality of good and evil. Till the very end, we do not have a clear villain. Is it Hyakkimaru regaining what was rightfully his but risking the lives of thousands, or the father who sacrificed his child for the greater good of his territory?

2. Bleach

Bleach Banner With Kurosaki Ichigo and Ginjo Kugo

Japanese Name BLEACH
Genre Adventure, Shonen, Martial Arts
Creator Tite “The Chad” Kubo
Is Bleach a series or a movie? Series (Quite Long)
Does Bleach have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Bleach? TYBW on Netflix, Full Series on Crunchyroll

Bleach is the biggest thing that happened to the anime industry in the early 2000s. It’s based on a manga of the same name and follows the story of an orange-haired teen named Kurosaki Ichigo. We won’t spoil the story for you, but our boy Ichigo isn’t normal. He gains some fancy Shinigami powers and an overlong kitchen knife to fight off enemies.

With over 1000 episodes and a lot of filler, Bleach will keep you engaged for months. The anime is still ongoing and close to completion, with the Thousand Year Blood War arc at its climactic peak. There are also three light novels and movies associated with the Bleachverse.

3. Monster

Monster Banner

Japanese Name MONSTER
Genre Crime, Mystery, Psychological Thriller
Creator Naoki Urasawa
Is Monster a series or a movie? Series
Does Monster have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Monster? Crunchyroll

We have to admit we read the manga before watching the anime. Normally, that’s like passing a death sentence on fun because you already know what’s going to happen. However, this wasn’t the case. The story of Monster is so gripping and well-fleshed that even if you read everything about the story, you’ll still enjoy the anime.

For reference, the title of this anime refers to the Monster within all humans. The story revolves around Johan Liebert, the best villain in all of anime and manga history. Johan Liebert is a hedonic nihilist whose only goal is not to exist. Yes, the anime has some dark topics, but this is what makes it even more enjoyable.

4. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul title with a white background

Japanese Name 東京喰種
Genre Dark Fantasy, Supernatural, Thriller
Creator Sui Ishida
Is Tokyo Ghoul a series or a movie? Series
Does Tokyo Ghoul have a manga? Yes
Where can you watch Tokyo Ghoul? Crunchyroll, Hulu

Tokyo Ghoul was, at one point, the biggest and most popular anime in the industry. We fell in love with it in the first episode, which is very rare. Normally, animes build up to a traumatic event that changes the main character and scars them for life. Tokyo Ghoul doesn’t do that, it goes guns blazing into it all in the first ten minutes. Poor old Kaneki.

The Ghoulverse is based on an alternate version of Japan, where a few Ghouls and humans live together, albeit at odds with each other. Kaneki is caught between these two worlds as a Ghoul-Human hybrid. It’s a great anime that will give you goosebumps every once in a while.

5. Gantz

Japanese Name GANTZ

Gantz is a dark, futuristic, sci-fi anime, where nothing makes sense, but everything makes sense. This verse is governed by humans, but every human is governed by their base desires of greed, bloodlust, savageness, and whatnot. The story follows a high-schooler named Kei Kurono.

We wish we could explain the plot to you, but honestly, no one can. The story keeps peaking at different points into new heights of outlandishness. Each episode grips your attention until your senses compel you to watch the next episode. We won’t spoil anything but the ending is something else. You’ll love it!
